I saw this newsprint manicure over on The Daily Nail and thought it was adorable (especially for bookworms and word lovers like myself). I did a little Google detective work to see how to recreate it, and was surprised at how easy it is! All of the tutorials I found called for vodka or other clear distilled spirits, but we were fresh out. I used isopropyl alcohol instead, and it seemed to get the job done. I tried a quick and dirty version this afternoon to share it with you:

Found this on Stumbleupon, too…oh my GOSH it looks absolutely fantastic. Mine chipped and warped a little bit (that’s probably because I used old, cheap nail polish), but with that, it adds a faded, old-book feel to it. Hard to explain, but it looks fabulous. I did it on my fingers in a pinkish beige, and on my sister’s toes in a light coral-y nude. It looks fantastic! Thinking about doing a white base coat and transferring comic strips onto it… even if it were to be too big, it would add a pop-arty flair to it. Thank you SO much for making my nails look fantastic!

[…] The night before, I saw that my friend Alyssa left a link on my wall to a nail tutorial that seemed rather easy. Again, I had nothing better to do, so I gave it a try, and I couldn’t be happier with my nails. They’re all newsprint-y and awesome. You can find the tutorial to the newsprint manicure here. […]

  • […] to try it out for myself. It looked pretty impossible at first but then I stumbled upon (yes) this great tutorial. The technique sounds easy enough but I have a feeling it’ll be a lot tougher than it […]

  • Tina Jo 06/15/2011 at 1:28 pm

I absolutely love my nails! The process is laughably easy and my nails look like a million bucks. I even used some larger text on my thumb, and it looks killer :) I used OPI’s “Getting Acquainted” as my base coat and a quick-dry top coat.

Also, I was curious, so I reapplied some newsprint to one nail, and the criss-cross pattern of the text looks awesome!

  • vidhujain88@yahoo.in 06/15/2011 at 3:20 am

that is adorable, great idea. i’ll try ..:)

  • Becca 06/15/2011 at 12:07 am

  • Anonymous 06/14/2011 at 3:06 pm

I tried this, and as soon as I put on the top coat, the print smudged all to hell. Never try it. It was a huge waste of my time.

  • Genie Degroote 06/13/2011 at 11:52 am

This design is steller! You obviously know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Wonderful job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

I found this via stumbleupon and I just finished my new beautiful nails! This is a very easy DIY gorgeous way to dress up nails! I used Pure Ice- wild thing, a very springy green. Thanks for the post!!

  • Anonymous 06/09/2011 at 12:28 pm

Hey, thanks for the great idea! I just tried it out following your instructions and it turned out perfectly! I can’t wait to show them off! :)

  • Nina 06/08/2011 at 9:49 pm

I tried this and it looks FABULOUS! I LOVE IT! Thank you so much! :]

  • Kit MacConnell 06/08/2011 at 6:27 pm

Fantastic! I love it! I can’t wait to give it a shot. I just have to go pick up some rubbing alcohol. =]

  • Anonymous 06/08/2011 at 5:38 pm

Absolutely love this! Tried it with a white nail polish as a base coat and it looks stellar!

  • Morgan 06/05/2011 at 8:57 pm

this is so cool!! I was wondering if you can do this on top of like a regular colour nail polish? i think that the pop of colour could be cool

    • keiralennox 06/06/2011 at 1:11 pm

Probably! You’d just want something light enough that the newsprint will show on top.

  • Belle 06/05/2011 at 1:50 pm

I found it easier to wet the paper with the rubbing alcohol than to wet your nail.

    • keiralennox 06/06/2011 at 1:10 pm

      Good idea!

  • Sara 06/04/2011 at 12:00 pm

love this! does it come off with regular nail polish remover though?

  • Shley 06/04/2011 at 2:35 am

Funny, as I stumbled this, I was wearing my “Newsie Nails”
as I like to call them. Found a similar picture for inspiration
and went for it. Nice tutorial. :)

  • Razz 06/03/2011 at 10:28 pm

  • Sunem 06/03/2011 at 7:25 pm

Will any old documents work as well?

    • keiralennox 06/03/2011 at 10:07 pm

I’m pretty sure it has to be newsprint!

    >I followed this tutorial and I have one tip to add.PUT THE TOP COAT ON QUICKLY!Otherwise you'll get smudges like I did. :( Also, try to pick a newspaper with dark font and a lot of ink. Mine came out really light.
