budget report: week 3/18

budget

Remember this post, in which I shared my new {gulp} quarter-long budget? Part of the deal was regularly checking in with updates on my progress; you know, to keep me honest and prevent those little spending slips that add up to total budgeting failure and whatnot?

Well I’m nearly halfway through the first month of the four-month challenge, and I haven’t spent a penny yet. Not on a bag or a shoe or even a lipgloss. It’s early in the game of course, but it seems that by announcing my intentions to all of you, I conjured a little Jiminy Cricket that talks me through every purchase temptation and keeps me on track! I’ve stopped in a few stores in the last couple of weeks to browse, but thought twice — and three and four times — about each thing I wanted to buy, ultimately walking out empty-handed.

I find myself wanting to hang on to that hundred bucks for as long as possible, holding out for something really fabulous, which is so very unusual for me! For as long as I can remember, extra money has always burned a hole in my pocket… I was blowing my birthday cash on neon scrunchies, Lip Smackers and MadLibs and shaking the quarters out of my piggy bank before I was old enough to pick out my own clothes.

I have no illusions that it’s going to remain this easy over the next 15 weeks, but for now I’m basking in the glow of the extra cash in my checking account.

  1. […] become a much savvier shopper with my new budget. My mom-in-law gave me a Macy’s gift card for my birthday, and I knew […]

  2. Keep at it! I hope you find that something fabulous to spend your money on!

  3. *NEST egg* LOL :)

  4. So good!! I really need to join you on this…I got an Old Navy card this Fall and while I’ve paid the bill off every month (which we thankfully can do), when I saw my statement this month, I was sick….I’m cutting the card up today…whatever discount they offer each month isn’t doing me any good if I’m dishing out “x” amount each month…Let’s break the temptation cycle and replace it with the joy of a great next egg (and using all we already have!!!) Thanks for the motivation!

  5. Good for you girl! Willpower is a learned skill especially when shopping. Keep going strong!

  6. I need to do something like this, I’m far too compulsive in my purchasing! I admire your dedication!

  7. What a coincidence! I’ve been meaning to take a break from spending for years now, but always cave in after the first few weeks (not unlike my exercise regime). I finally reached a point (Aug 21, 2012 precisely) where I felt like a huge failure for not able to stick to my decisions. On that day, I decided to stop spending and lose the last 5 pounds that I’ve been meaning to for years. I guess my main motivation is to prove to myself that I can do anything I can put my mind to. I am hoping to last until Jan 21st at least. I’m proud to say that I’ve done well (although my ban was only on purchases of clothes, shoes and accessories, not on make-up). The pounds are altogether another story though :( but I soldier on. I had allowed myself a little treat for my birthday in a couple of weeks time but I might not even buy that. I just want to start with a new lighter me, a fresh, guilt-free, carefully chosen new wardrobe for S/S 2013. A guilt-free shopping spree during my favourite season (S/S 13) is my other motivation.

  8. Well done you! My clothes shopping ban is going well too – haven’t been tempted once (yet)! With budgets, I always find it’s best to hold out as long as you can in the month, because sometimes once you start spending it’s hard to stay under budget ;)

  9. Keep it up! You can do it and I can’t wait to see what you splurge on when done.

  10. Yea! Congrats!

  11. Such a great challenge. I have no idea if I could ever do that! I am always so tempted to buy just one thing and it turns into $60. :(
Good Luck! I think you can do it!!
Ps. If i ever try this I will link back to you.

  12. congrats – I beat it has lifted a bit of a weight off of your shoulders! Having to budget makes you sure you love something before you buy it – you’ll end up using and wearing and loving every purchase instead of having a bunch of clothes stare at you from your closet, making you feel guilty for spending money on things you don’t even wear.

  13. You are doing awesome. Believe it or not it will actually get easier. It did for me anyway. I don’t have a specific budget, but recently quit my job to start my own business, and so have no extra money to spend. At first it was extremely hard, I would walk any from the big purchases, and would end up buying something little as a treat, but that can add up quickly. Three months in I find that I really don’t have the urge to buy things. Also my idea of wants and needs has been severely restructured.

  14. I should try to do this! I just spent $78 on clothes yesterday that I did now need. And I’m a student!! I wish I hadn’t now. But they were on sale so they were a final sale. I need to stop compulsive buying! My goal is to not buy anything for myself until after Christmas.

  15. congrats, you can do it!

  16. I was the same kind of little kid! Always spending every cent i could get my hands on. I really need to do something like this, it’s good to see you’re doing so well already! :) keep it going!
