can’t leave home without…

organized makeup drawer

I’m more of a skincare girl than makeup girl. So my day-to-day beauty routine is all about achieving glowing, healthy-looking skin with the fewest number of products possible. Oh, and quickly; I’d rather catch a few extra zzz‘s than spend a lot of time on my face, feel me?

I love playing with cosmetics, but I save the fancy stuff (read: liquid liner, smokey eyes, and full-coverage foundation) for fancy occasions like cocktail parties or girls’ nights. When it comes to the everyday, my beauty requirements are pretty simple: make me look spry and well-rested even when I’m not, and protect my skin from the aging effects of the Florida sunshine.

My morning ritual starts with a good scrubbin’ with Simone France‘s signature “Sandwich.” This two minute pamper sesh feels something like a spa facial at my bathroom sink and gently exfoliates and moisturizes my skin to silky loveliness (more on that here).

After waiting about ten minutes to give the moisturizer time to absorb, I apply a thin layer of NARS Pro-Prime. When that’s had a few minutes to set, I follow it up with NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 (the shade that works best for my fair skin is Alaska). I love this product. It’s really lightweight and moisturizing, and dries to a glowing  — but somehow not shiny or shimmery — finish that lasts all day. Good stuff, and worth the splurge because, like all NARS cosmetics, a little goes a long way.

While my tinted moisturizer base is drying, I get to work taming my brows. I shape them and fill in the sparse spots with Anastasia’s Beauty Express for Brows and Eyes palette (you can find an old review here) and then set them with clear brow gel using upward strokes.

I keep my eye makeup really simple; usually just a solid color wash of a neutral shimmery color on the lid, followed by a highlighter on the brow bone and inside corner. I have a thing for eye palettes, and I usually find great ones on the super-cheap on Hautelook (including both of the Lorac palettes pictured below). Mascara is a must, and Too Faced Lash Injection is my favorite right now. It creates tiny tubes on your lashes that don’t smudge or flake, and they come right off with warm water so you don’t have to contend with tugging removal or raccoon eyes at the end of a long day. Benefit’s They’re Real takes first runner up, and I use it when I want more dramatic lashes. Once while wearing it, my mom asked if I had falsies on, so that’s a mascara win in my book.

Speaking of Benefit, Benetint rocks my socks off. I don’t know why I haven’t jumped on this cult train before! It gives this great natural flush on bare skin or over makeup, and it lasts a loooong time. I’ve been using it every day since getting a little cheeky Benefit sampler set for Christmas, and I’ve totally neglected my beloved NARS powder blushes. The kit also included the High Beam highlighter, which is great for accentuating cheek bones and brow bones and all those other face bones that benefit from a little luminescence.

I finish things up with a quick swipe of the lip color du jour, and I’m out the door!

So, I’m curious… what are your “can’t leave the house without it” products?

today, yet I by no means found any interesting article like yours.
It’s pretty worth sufficient for me. In my opinion, if all webmasters and bloggers
made good content as you probably did, the web might be much more helpful than ever before.

  4. As weird as it sounds, I like to do an egg-white facial mask about once a week. I feel like it tightens my pores, clears up a bit of acne and gives my skin a glow!

    1. Ooohh, I’ve never tried this! I’ll have to give it a go — I’m all for anything that will give me a little glow ;-)

  5. I like this post. I’ve never heard of Simone France before so I’ll have to go check out some of their stuff. Thanks for sharing! :)

  6. This blog is a lot of fun & i enjoyed reading it. I can’t leave home without my Clarisonic Mia and the rest of my 7 item skincare routine, the Naked Palatte is a must, Benefit Hervana Blush, Watt’s Up, Benetint, Stay, Don’t Stray, Nars Albatross, Tarte Amazonian Clay Bronzer, Make Up Forever Eyeliner and Aqua cream shadow in pink and gold and HD setting powder,
Lancôme Doll Lashes, Cils Booster, and Teint Idol 24 hour foundation. It sounds high maintenance, but I can fit it all in 1 makeup bag.

    1. Oooo, my husband bought me a Clarisonic Mia for my birthday and I LOVE it!

Thanks for all these great product recommendations! So many great picks. Not high maintenance — do what makes you feel gorgeous every day!! :)

  7. I’ve never tried Benefit products before, but I’m eager to try! Which product do you suggest to start out with?

    1. Check out this great little Benefit value palette from Sephora! It has two of my favorites — Benetint and They’re Real mascara, as well as another product I love, Stay Don’t Stray. It’s $32, and a great introduction to Benefit’s products!

  8. I’m primarily an Origins girl, so my must-wears include their Ginzing mascara, VitaZing tinted moisturizer and liquid lip color. That being said, I love my Benefit lipstick and am curious about Benetint!

  9. I love this post! Keeping it simple is totally my thing too, and I’m so glad you mentioned these Mascaras. I’ve heard positive things about both of them specifically from other girl friends of mine and with your encouragement as well, I MUST go pick them up from the store.

    Thanks and happy Wednesday!

    1. If you’re trying them out for the first time, I’d recommend checking out Sephora and see if they have the minis in stock. You can usually find them for around $10 :)

      1. Thanks for the tip!! I will!

  10. I was a Benefit mascara fan until recently. ModelCo Fibre Lashxtend Lengthening Mascara was included in my Birchbox, and I’m now a total convert. While I though those other brand mascaras felt weightless and flakeless, that’s all I can feel if I use them now! This stuff is smudge-proof all day and easy to take off, plus it has a mirror on the tube. Give it a shot if you ever need a change! (Full review of it here: http://ohjuliaann.wordpress.com/2012/11/20/birchbox-number-one/)

Thanks for the tip about waiting 10 minutes after moisturizing to put on make-up. I always have done one right after the other, and am normally displeased with my foundation results.

    1. It makes it your foundation less slippery! Another good foundation trick (which also works for tinted moisturizer) is to warm it up in your hands a little bit before you apply it. It really helps it go on more smoothly.

  11. Oh I totally feel you with having a squeaky clean face. Nothing like it! My new favorite product these days is Lancome’s Renergie Eye Multiple Action. It’s so moisturizing under the eye and conceals the perfect amount for the days when I wanna wear very little makeup. Great post, doll!

  12. Great post! I currently use Max Factor’s Masterpiece Max mascara which claims to give up to 400% volume. All I know is it works great on my lashes after I’ve curled them a little. My mum also thought I was wearing falsies the other day! And it’s a good value product. I like the suggestion of tinted moisturiser though – it gives a good alternative to wearing foundation, I might try this :-)

  13. i’m a mascara and blush kind of girl who has recently given into the power of lipstick. on an important day (interviews, etc) i rub in some Tarte tinted moisturizer and swipe a little shadow on my lids. easy, breezy, lazy!

  14. I cant leave home without my NAKED palette :)

  15. For me it’s my lip balm, lip gloss, and lotion.

  16. I used the same NARS primer and Benefit Mascara. They are two of my favorite products. I can’t leave home with SPF! :)

  17. I just tried L’Oreal’s new illuminizer (sp?) and LOVE it. I mix one big drop of that with a half drop of foundation and put that over my regular moisturizer. It really makes your skin glow. It’s a super fantastic, affordable option to some of the Sephora brands when you’re on a budget.

  18. Hi there! This post is soo cool. Super girly, it just made me want to chill and talking make up and fashion with some friends! and loved the little survey at the end. My essentials are my bronzer and mascara! Quite simple ;)

  19. I LOVE all of my Benefit products, but I have never tried Benetint. Will have to check it out the next time I am in Sephora! I am 24, and thought that blemishes would disappear instantly as soon as I turned 20, but that hasn’t been the case. How well does the NARS tinted sunscreen cover?

    1. I would say it’s a medium coverage, almost like a sheer foundation. The best part is it really stays put all day, so you won’t have to worry about losing coverage.
