reliving high school, one prom order at a time.

prom corsage design

I spent most of last Thursday, Friday and Saturday designing corsages and boutonnieres for the prom-attending upperclassmen of my alma mater, with mild to moderate heart palpitations at the realization that my own senior prom was ten years ago.

See those cute kids up there? In high school, I had an after school and summer job at a private preschool working with 2-6 year olds. {I also spent a lot of time in tanning beds.} Those same kids have poured into our shop over the last several weeks ordering prom flowers because they’re in high school now. And as if that isn’t depressing enough, none of them had a clue that the lady at the flower shop is the same girl who rubbed their backs at nap time, chased them around the playground, and babysat them on the weekends. Wahhh…

It feels like just yesterday that I was cruising around in my white ’97 Jeep Cherokee with the windows down — cranked by hand, mind you — listening to Incubus, The Get Up Kids, and the Dixie Chicks and spending my entire [tiny] paycheck on clothes, eyebrow waxes, tanning salons, and mani/pedis. Now I’m thinking about my 10 year reunion. What the what?!

    1. Thank you, Allison! Me, too! When they’re designed well, they’re like pretty pieces of jewelry :-)

  4. Oh man, The Get Up Kids! You just tossed me in the Way Back Machine with that one! :)

  5. Beautiful corsages! I can’t wait for my prom! Few years ago I thought that I have a lot time to arrangements for my prom. And now, it’s only few moths to prom :)

  6. Same boat here…10 years since high school, but it seems like it was just yesterday! Your high school playlist sounds a lot like mine – the Get Up Kids were the best!! What about the Ataris…did you ever listen to them? Ah, the good ol’ days…

    1. I feel like I did listen to The Ataris, so I just did a little Googling and can’t remember… This may mean my brain is older than I think ;-)

I’m so glad you commented here so I could find your blog, because I LOVE it. Your post on organization/productivity apps just made my night, and I’m installing several of your picks on my iPad as we speak. I also subscribed to your posts by email, so I look forward to keeping up with you! :-)

      1. Haha, I went through a skater phase in high school and I probably spent too much time hanging out with those guys…needless to say, they introduced me to a lot of music that I don’t even remember listening to now. I do remember the Get Up Kids though, and Dashboard Confessional. :)

I’m so glad you found my blog and that you love it! What a compliment, because I also love your blog, and am a fellow bargain shopper. ;) I can’t remember the last time I paid full price for something, and I almost get as much of a thrill seeing the adorable outfits you put together than I do shopping for them! It’s so refreshing to find someone who isn’t posting Vogue items that cost more than my rent. I really appreciate how relatable your posts are – that and I love flowers, so you’re def. one of my favorite reads! Thanks so much for following, and hopefully I’ll have plenty more good stuff to post about in the future!

  7. It’s definitely sad that as adults we tend to remember the kiddos more than they will end up remembering us, but it’s all worth it if you get to see how happy and healthy they grow up to be! I’m sure they remember you even if they didn’t realize who you were in the shop :)

    1. Such a sweet way to look at it, Jackie!!

  8. Nice work! It was only a few years ago that I attended my senior prom… time flies!

  9. beautiful! What a fun job you must have :)
