new lengths

I’ve spent the last three weeks pinning hairstyles. Asymmetrical bobs, long layers, bangs, color and tutorials I’ll probably never try. I’ve waged a war with myself over that age-old question: To chop, or not to chopI dragged Chad into the fray, showing him picture after picture of blown-out coifs and asking, “What do you think about this one? Too short? Bangs or no?” Patient and loving husband that he is, he humored me each time but ultimately gave me the same answer: “Babe, your hair looks great however you wear it. I’m down with whatever.” Code for: “I’m in way over my head here, just pick one already and let’s go have a beer.

Why do I agonize so much over every hair appointment, like it’s going to be my last? I used to do this in nail salons, too; standing in front of that wall of color with a blank stare for several minutes trying to choose which shade to paint my toes, as if I’d have to live with the decision forever. Tell me I’m not the only one who does this. Please?

I’d never been particularly attached to my hair, until it was long. When you’ve dealt with the awkward grow-outs and months {years!} of waiting to reach that target length, you don’t want to go back and do it all over again. But you also start to get the itch for something new; and if you wake up in the middle of the night with your hair wrapped around your arm just one more time you swear you’re going to lose. your. mind!

By the time I sat in my longtime stylist’s chair yesterday afternoon, I still didn’t know what to do. I gave her a rundown of all my manic ideas, and a free pass to just do whatever she wanted. She took off about 4 inches (thankfully removing some over-dyed ends from my home haircolor fail) and added layers around the front to remove some bulk. I’m going back next week for some subtle ombre foils!

  1. I love that cut! I know exactly what you mean, I spent the last six months trying to pick a color for highlights. Not a full on color change, highlights!

  2. I think it’s harder for a hairstylist, like myself, to go into a salon because I get too picky or am afraid of them messing it up, cutting too much off, etc…I’m right there with you though! Your hair looks fabulous. (:

  3. Your hair looks lovely! I got my hair cut this week almost the same length. I was unsure about it but I do enjoy it not being as long and wrapped around my arms (ha ha)

  4. I just bought the dress!

  5. I like the denim feel. Chic!

  6. I totally understand the hair thing! Your hair looks so good and I absolutely love your bag!

  7. Very cute new do!

  8. It’s at the perfect length! I love it so much. I love changing my hair up all the time! I’m naturally a very light brunette. I’ve gone super dark, and I was a redhead which is one of my favorites, for over 4 years. Now I’m a blonde, and I’m looking to be a pixie blonde next year! It’s great to change it up

  9. No matter how much I tell myself that “it’ll grow back”, I still envision a botched cut and perm when I was in the 6th grade and had to live with the “poodle ‘do” for 3 years (seriously! that’s how long it took to grow out!!). I’ve decided that I’m going to be the old lady with the long hair in a braid.

  10. Well, these decisions are important you know. Haha
Best decisions I took for my hair is chopping the long locks off and sporting a bob!
Your hair looks lovely! And you’ve got a lovely blog too.

  11. Your hair looks great! This cut really suits you! And no worries, you’re not alone. Every time I walk in a salon I’m terrified that somebody will ruin my hair which sometimes even prevents me from going to get my haircut at times :/

    Thanks for sharing! ^.^

  12. It looks gorgeous! I’ve been growing my hair for the last 2 years so I know the feeling! Went form Ombre ends last time and I love it :D

  13. you are definitely not alone! I obsessed over cutting my hair for well over two months before I finally did. I wasn’t so much worried about chopping my long hair off, as I was not getting the right cut for my face shape. I desperately wanted to cut my hair because it was very heavy and had started giving me headaches when I put it up. I love your hair cut, it really frames your face so well and I’m especially loving the bounce :)

  14. I love the new cut! I went through the same thing yesterday… I grew my hair out for my wedding (last year) and thought I will keep growing it so I can donate it. It finally got long enough and I couldn’t decide if I wanted to go through with it. Finally my husband said stop talking about it and do it – also I thought I was the only one who had the issue with the hair getting wrapped around my arm – serious long hair problems. I cut off more than 12″ – my hair feel SOOO much healthier and a good deed along with it!

  15. Oh you are so right! Decisions are such a scary thing especially when it come to hair and nails. I am going through the hair one now. I just get so afraid it won’t EVER grow back!! Not logical I know. But you look fabulous, and you did the right thing. Your hair looks so healthy. Good choice!

  16. Your hair looks gorgeous! Probably my favorite length I’ve seen :) *ive been following you for over a year now!* it really is beautiful on you :)

  17. I would love to hear how you style it in the AM. :) Looks great on you.

  18. I am totally with you on the decisions thing. I go into a nail place and stand in front of the polish for at least 15 minutes. (Forget about gel, too much of a commitment!) I could be halfway done with the manicure by the time I pick something out! Something about changing your appearance, even for the short term is a little scary. I will say, though, that I have never been that way with hair. I have done it all – bangs, bobs, all different colors. At the end of the day, it’s just more fun to take a risk — and like you said, it always grows back! Your blog is lovely & so is your haircut!

  19. I have always liked your hair. It looks thick and healthy. And your beautiful. I have fine limp hair. And at the moment trying to let it grow out even though the longer my hair gets the worst it looks!!!! What I dislike is when I get it done and they say it looks great and to be honest it is back combed so much a bird could make a great nest in my fine combed back hair. I understand all that you are saying about hair and nails. BlessingS Suezanne

  20. Your hair is at such a great length! I think ombre would look amazing with your hair color. Can’t wait to see the change! P.S. Super cute denim shirt dress. <3

  21. Love the cut! I just took the plunge as well and got 3 inches chopped for summer! Much more manageable – no regrets :)

  22. Great outfit .. You look very pretty

  23. Your hair looks amazing! I do the same thing – agonize over whether or not to chop. In the end, it all grows out anyway! Nice dress.

  24. I think it looks amazing! Definitely a great decision taking the plunge :)

  25. No you are not the only one! My worst fear is coming out of the hairdressers and feeling like nothing has changed, so I tend to take the plunge more often! Yesterday I went from shoulder length to mega short asymmetric bob in one hour. Best desicion ever. Why? Because hair grows back! You look wonderful x

    1. You nailed it! I feel the same way. If I’m going to spend $50 on a haircut, I want it to look like I really DID something! ;-) And you’re so right, it always grows back!
