that’s a wrap!

This time last year, I madeĀ a list of goals for a better 2013. They weren’t lofty promises or life-altering resolutions, but simple personal changes that did, in fact, make 2013 pretty great.

Here are a few things that stand out for me when I think about how I’ve changed in the last twelve months:

(1) Relationships: With each passing year, I have a better grip on the value of relationships and the importance of investing in the people you love. Whether it’s carving out time for weekly dinners with my parents, celebrating special occasions with my nearest and dearest, regularly calling/texting long distance friends, or spending more quality time at home with C, I’m more committed than ever to letting my favorite people know how much they mean to me. Because without them, I’d be nothin’.

(2) Work: I’ve always defined myself by my job(s), and owning my own business takes my work obsession to another level. For years, people have told me I need to find a better balance or face irreparable burn-out, and I’m finally beginning to realize they’re right. Someone recently put it all in perspective: “You’re planning on running this business for a while, right?” I nodded. “Like a long, long while?” Of course! Then they told me that if I wanted to love my career ten years from now as much as I do right this minute, I need to slow down and pace myself for the journey.

(3) Blogging: Oh man, I gave myself a lot of time off from this space in 2013. More than I intended to, honestly; but I think I needed the break to get re-inspired and really evaluate what I’m doing here. I’m growing up, and my blog is, too. I’m not 25 anymore, and eventually, I’m probably going to get tired of posting photos of what I wear.Ā In the last six months, without the pressure of styling “blog-worthy” outfits and taking perfect photos, I’ve fallen in love with a super simple aesthetic built around easy basics. Which is great, but admittedly not worth sharing.

However, I have so many other things I’d like to share around here! I’m still figuring it all out, but in 2014, you can expect to see more of my other interests and less of my mug.

Happy new year, friends!

  1. I’m inspired by your conviction to be who you are, and not be defined by and kept stuck by some of the successes of your blog, like the outfit photos. I can also relate to the problems of defining oneself by one’s work (I’m dealing with serious burn-out (on leave from my job) due to that very issue, as I write.) Once again, your honest and open self-reflection is a service to others. Forge on! Congratulations on your successful year and all of the best for 2014.

  2. Love your goals! I took a lot away from this :) Happy new year!

  3. I love this! I’m just starting out my blog, and keep on reminding myself to only post what I care about, not what other people want to see :p

  4. New year, new blog. I scrapped my old mission statement and expanded it, allowing me freedom to explore what I really love :) Great post!

  5. I love your outlook on this blogging matter. You are right, it can sometimes feel stagnate, especially when there is more to life than just outfits. This is also why I started this blog, to hopefully share things that inspire me, make me grow, things I love doing.I am looking forward reading about the “other things”. I might be inspired myself. Cheers!

  6. Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I have nominated your blog for Shauny Award of Blogging Excellence! I wrote a post about it on the link below, congratulations!! http://letsmakeupgirl.com/2014/01/03/shauny-award-for-blogging-excellence-thank-you/

I absolutely love reading your blog, and I can’t wait to see more! xxx

  7. happy new year, keep it up girl!

  8. Those are good, simple, and noteworthy resolutions for 2014. I agree on the relationships piece. It seems that when you get older, you start reevaluating your relationships, and realizing the value of making time for the people that are important in your life. Relationships are like a garden that always needs tending to!

I hope I never tire of posting pics of my personal style, but I foresee that someday I may come to that fork in the road as well. I look forward to seeing what your blog transforms to this year!

  15. This just inspired me to reflect on last year… no point charging on with plans that I can’t handle yet.

  16. Happy New Year Keira! :)

Firstly, I love that you have found happiness in the simple things in life such as managing your own “Flower” shop and that’s beautiful. Also, I would like to add that I completely agree with your point about “Relationships” and “Blogging”. As important as it is to spend time with the people you love, I think it’s also important to know who you can do without ;)

    Happy 2014!

  17. Happy New Year!

I just love these reflection posts. I’m looking forward to seeing how A Pretty Penny evolves in the new year. I can totally relate to finding and loving a wardrobe full of basics. I think my run with “blog worhty” outfits went 3 or 4 posts, and even then, they were pretty basic. What can I say I’m a casual girl :).

  18. Firstly Happy New Year, I really love the fact that you reflect over your past goals, and I think you’ve done a great job with the “simple” changes. I don’t think you’re giving yourself enough credit, the simplest things are often the ones who are more challenging to be better at or change. But when you do the change they can be so very giving! And that much better than making big new years resolutions you end up not finishing or not reaching :) I wish you a happy new year once more and I hope that you will let us know what your new years resolutions are for 2014 :)

  19. Hi Keira,
I just wanted to say that I love your blog and look forward to many more of your beautiful and interesting posts. I wish you a wonderful year 2014, filled with love, inspiration and happiness.

    xoxo Juliane
