My #1 Drugstore Foundation

When summer rolls around, I push all my full-coverage foundations to the deep, dark depths of my makeup drawer. I love “less is more” summer beauty vibes — and the Florida heat and humidity literally melts heavy makeup right off yo’ face — so I reach for lightweight water-based foundations, sheer skin tints, and all-in-one CC creams that even out my complexion and give it a little glow, while letting my freckles peek through.

This drugstore favorite delivers all of the above, for less than $10.

One of my favorite natural-looking foundations is the L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion. I think it’s one of the best products at the drugstore year-round, but I find its sheer-to-medium luminous coverage especially perfect for summertime.

I keep this cushion foundation in my makeup drawer, and a backup in my handbag for the frazzled mornings when I run out of the house with a naked face; it’s quick and easy to throw on when I get to the shop. It comes in a convenient, mess-free compact with a foundation-soaked cushion that you gently press to release the product onto your fingers, sponge or brush. (This drugstore sponge is my go-to, and a pack of 2 is less than $9.) The formula is super light weight — it’s almost watery — so it’s foolproof to apply and easy to build in the areas where you need extra coverage.

This foundation is ideal for normal to dry skin; it may be too hydrating for combination/oily skin types. It wears well throughout the day without creasing or fading, and I love pairing it with this mineral powder for reliable all-day coverage. It can get a little shiny by the end of the day, which is pretty unavoidable this time of year, but I just dab oily areas with a blotting sheet as needed and I’m good to go.

The L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion comes in a range of shades from fair to deep skin complexions with options for three undertones: neutral, cool, and warm. (See: How to Determine Your Skin Tone and Undertone) W2 is a nearly perfect match for my light golden skin; for reference, I’m an NC20 or ‘Light Plus’ in MAC foundations, and a 117/118 in MAKE UP FOR EVER.

The L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion doesn’t contain sunscreen, so be sure to layer it over an antioxidant-infused SPF 30+ for perfect coverage plus protection!
